About this album

After the 1976 assassination attempt at his home, Bob Marley fled to London. He spent his exile living at 42 Oakley Street, playing football in Battersea Park and soaking up the energy of the UK punk scene. Exodus was tracked at Island’s Basing Street Studios, where the Wailers shared space with the Rolling Stones and Jethro Tull. You can hear that international polish on this record. It’s the sound of a man who just survived a bullet and decided to conquer the world instead of hiding from it. You own nine Wailers records, which puts you deep into the Tuff Gong territory. But looking at your shelf, you’ve got a massive appetite for 90s grunge and the Desert Sessions scene. Exodus is the bridge between those worlds. It has that same heavy, rhythmic tension you find in your Kyuss or Morphine records, just tuned to a different frequency. This 1990 reissue keeps that bottom end thick. It’s the perfect pivot point between your love for classic R&B grooves and the heavy stoner-rock sludge you keep in high rotation.
