About this album

Everyone talks about the groove, but nobody talks about the cost. D’Angelo spent three years in Electric Lady with ?uestlove and Pino Palladino, and you can hear the sanity fraying on every track. They weren't just tracking songs. They were chasing a ghost in the machine. Steve Mandel engineered the whole mess, and he had to fight to keep the tape from wearing out. It's the most deliberate album in your collection. A total departure from the slick, overproduced trash that dominated the charts in 2000. You’ve got the 2012 Modern Classics reissue. It’s not the original Virgin pressing, but it does the job for the low end. Listen to Pino’s bass on "Feel Like Makin’ Love." He’s barely touching the strings. It’s a masterclass in restraint. Most people just skip to "Untitled," but if you aren't spinning the deep cuts like "Greatdayndamornin'," you’re missing the point of why this record matters. It’s a cult object for a reason. Keep it clean. That wax is a collector's piece now.
