About this album
Martin Hannett didn't just produce this; he basically built a sonic cage for the band. He made Stephen Morris play drums on the roof to get that cold, echoing decay, and he forced the band to record in the middle of the night just to keep the mood claustrophobic. It’s not a rock record. It’s a funeral in a factory. You’ve got a massive pile of orchestral and soundtrack work, which makes sense given your focus on atmosphere. Most people think Joy Division is about the grit, but this album is all about the negative space. Hannett left holes in the mix that make you feel like you're falling into them. If you like the tension in those Arcane soundtracks or the dread Massive Attack builds, this is the blueprint.
