About this album

Aaron Dessner sent these instrumentals over as a whim, never expecting a full album to drop out of it. The man tracked everything in his garage studio in upstate New York while the world was falling apart. That claustrophobia is all over the tape. It’s not a pop record. It’s a folk record written by a woman who finally stopped caring about the charts. You’ve got enough Republic output in your crates to know the label pivot in 2020 was a calculated bet. Since you’re spinning Ariana Grande and Conan Gray, you’ve clearly got a taste for the polished side of this label. Keep that same energy but lean into the production lineage if you want to understand why this record sounds the way it does.
