About this album

Miles walked into 30th Street Studio with nothing but chord scales written on scraps of paper. He wanted the band to be surprised by the music. Bill Evans wrote the liner notes for the original sleeve, describing the sessions like a Japanese painter trying to capture the spontaneity of the moment. He wasn't wrong. That piano player on "Blue in Green" is Wynton Kelly, by the way. Miles actually brought him in specifically for "Freddie Freeloader" because he felt the track needed a bluesier touch than what Evans could provide. It’s a masterclass in mood, and you won’t find a collection in this shop that doesn’t lean on its gravity sooner or later.
