Creation Records almost went bankrupt funding this thing because Kevin Shields wouldn't stop tinkering with the samplers. He spent two years chasing a sound he heard in his head, eventually burning through half a dozen studios and enough tape to wrap around the Earth. The drums on this record were sampled from live takes, chopped, and re-looped until they lost all human rhythm. It’s a sonic assault that sounds like it’s falling apart. You’re starting your collection with one of the most obsessive pieces of production in history. You won't find a clean snare hit or a crisp vocal here. That’s the point. It’s a total immersion job. Most bands write songs. Shields built a wall of noise and invited you to walk through it. Nothing else sounds like it because no one else is crazy enough to try.
