Biography
Vildhjarta is a progressive metal band from Hudiksvall, Sweden. The band plays in an aberrant Meshuggah-influenced musical style with use of djent guitar. The band is characterized by harmonic minor progressions, jarring enharmonic staccato riffs, layers of reverberant guitars and dual lead vocalists. They were signed to Century Media Records in 2011. The band's name, Vildhjarta, originates from the Swedish role-playing game Drakar och Demoner. Vildhjärta (not "vildhjarta") means "wild heart" in Swedish.
The Arc of Vildhjarta
The pivots — what forced Vildhjarta to reinvent.
The Omnislash Demo Era
Before the polish of Century Media, the band was a rotating cast of Swedes uploading jagged snippets to MySpace and Got-Djent forums. These early tracks like the 2009 Omnislash EP were raw and lacked the cinematic dread they’d later master, focusing instead on pure polyrhythmic exercises. You can hear the struggle to find their voice through the digital clipping, a band figuring out how to make technicality sound like more than just a math equation.
The Concept of Thall
Signing to Century Media for Måsstaden in 2011 forced a level of production density that redefined the genre’s limits. Working with Jens Bogren’s Fascination Street Studios for the mastering gave the record a massive, suffocating low end that turned their chaotic riffs into a cohesive narrative. This period established the 'Thall' identity, where the music became inseparable from the folklore of their snowy, isolated hometown.
The Under Vatten Expansion
After nearly a decade of silence and lineup shifts, including Calle Thomér becoming a primary architect of the sound, the band returned with a double album that threw out the traditional verse-chorus-verse structure entirely. Måsstaden under vatten was tracked and mixed with a level of detail that felt obsessive, layering clean, eerie melodies over guitars that sounded more like synthesizers than wood and wire. It proved that their hiatus wasn't laziness, but a long-game strategy to wait until the technology caught up with the sounds in Bergström's head.
Influences
- Meshuggah — The band has explicitly stated in early interviews that Meshuggah's 'Catch Thirtythree' was the blueprint for their rhythmic repetition. You hear it in the mechanical, unrelenting focus on a single groove that shifts under your feet. It's the DNA of everything they do.
- Allan Holdsworth — Daniel Bergström has cited the late jazz-fusion legend as a massive influence on his chord voicings and the 'slippery' feel of his leads. You can hear those weird, non-linear intervals in the clean guitar passages that float over the heavy rhythms. It’s the secret sauce that keeps them from being just another chug-heavy band.
- Hildur Guðnadóttir — The band members have praised her dark, cello-driven scores for films like Joker and Chernobyl for shaping their approach to atmosphere. This cinematic dread is all over their later work, especially the ambient transitions between tracks. It’s less about metal and more about the sound of impending doom.
- Ben Frost — The industrial grit and sound manipulation on Frost's records were a direct inspiration for the texture of the guitars on Måsstaden under vatten. You hear this in the way they process their low-end to sound like physical objects being crushed. It gives the records a visceral, tactile quality that most digital metal lacks.
- Cul de Sac — The band has mentioned this experimental post-rock outfit when discussing their use of dissonance and unconventional structures. The influence shows up in the way Vildhjarta builds tension without relying on a typical climax. They learned how to be uncomfortable from the masters of the avant-garde.
