Biography
Viagra Boys is a Swedish post-punk band formed in Stockholm in 2015. The group consists of lead singer Sebastian Murphy, guitarist Linus Hillborg, keyboardist Elias Jungqvist, bassist Henrik "Benke" Höckert, drummer Tor Sjödén, and saxophonist Oskar Carls. Their lyrics often employ satire and dark humor to critique hypermasculinity and far-right conspiracy theories. The Arc of Viagra Boys
The pivots — what forced Viagra Boys to reinvent.
The Punk Rock Welfare State
The early EPs and Street Worms were built on the back of Daniel Fagerström’s production, capturing a band that sounded like they were falling down stairs in slow motion. You hear it in the basslines—Henrik Höckert playing these dead-simple, locked-in grooves while Murphy ad-libs about being a dog. It was a reaction to the polished Swedish pop machine, opting for a blown-out, ugly sound that prioritized the rhythm section over guitar heroics. This era is defined by that sharp, jagged saxophone cutting through the murk like a siren in a basement club.
The Pelle Gunnerfeldt Pivot
Bringing in Pelle Gunnerfeldt—the guy who helped define The Hives' sound—for Welfare Jazz shifted the frequency from basement noise to a weird, mutant form of country and blues. The room got bigger, the pianos got more prominent, and they started messing with ballads like 'In Spite of Ourselves.' It wasn't a play for the charts, but a realization that they could be musically ambitious without losing the grit. The production became cleaner, which only served to make Murphy’s lyrics about drug-induced paranoia sound more unnerving and detailed.
The Cave World Shift
By the time they hit the sessions for Cave World, the band had fully embraced synthesizers and a frantic, hyper-modern pace. The focus moved from the pub to the internet, with the music reflecting a world of conspiracy theories and evolution-in-reverse. It’s their most electronic-leaning record, trading some of the post-punk swing for a stiff, robotic urgency that feels like a panic attack. The guitars became textures rather than leads, letting the percussion and electronics drive the satire home.
Influences
- The Stooges — Murphy has cited Fun House as a blueprint for their live energy and his own vocal approach. You hear it in the confrontational, loose-cannon stage presence and the way the saxophone is used as a weapon of noise rather than a melodic instrument. It's the same primitive, high-volume nihilism.
- The Birthday Party — The band frequently points to Nick Cave’s early, chaotic output as the source for their 'unhinged gentleman' aesthetic. The jagged, dissonant guitar work and the sense that the whole song might collapse at any second is straight out of the Junkyard playbook. It’s theatricality rooted in actual dirt.
- Devo — The satirical, de-evolution themes on Cave World are a direct nod to the Akron legends. You can hear the influence in their stiff, mechanical rhythms and the way they use humor to mask a deep cynicism about the human race. They took the 'Are We Not Men?' question and applied it to modern trolls.
- The Fall — Mark E. Smith’s ghost haunts the repetitive, three-chord structures and Murphy’s half-spoken, repetitive vocal delivery. Like The Fall, Viagra Boys rely on a locked-in rhythm section that allows the frontman to rant over the top. It's the 'repetition, repetition, repetition' mantra in full effect.
- Butthole Surfers — The band has referenced the Surfers when discussing their love for absurdist, drug-damaged storytelling and sonic experimentation. You hear it in the weird vocal processing and the way they lean into the grotesque. It’s about finding the humor in the absolute worst situations.
