Polish trumpeter, composer, author of film and theater music, improviser, associated with free jazz and avant-garde music. Born July 11, 1942 in Rzeszów (opens in a new tab), died July 29, 2018 in Warszawa.
Tomasz Stańko's rich oeuvre was characterized by innovation from the beginning. Jazz Darings was one of the first free jazz bands in Europe, the album "Astigmatic" recorded with Komeda is considered a masterpiece, and "Balladyna" - today included in the exclusive series ECM Touchstones (opens in a new tab) - was an important point of reference for American jazz musicians.
