Biography

British (mainly) instrumental pop/rock band, renamed in October 1959 from The Drifters, originally also the backing band for Cliff Richard, fronted by best known member guitarist Hank Marvin.
Original drummer Tony Meehan left in October 1961 and was replaced by Brian Bennett, and original bassist Jet Harris left in April 1962; he was replaced by Brian Locking, who in turn was replaced in late 1963 by John Rostill. They disbanded in 1968, and then briefly reformed in 1969-1970. Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch teamed up with John Farrar to form Marvin, Welch & Farrar from 1970-1973. In 1973 The Shadows reformed with Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch and Brian Bennett all re-joining. Various musicians joined the band from 1973-1990, in 1990 the band disbanded yet again. They have since reunited in 2004–2005, 2008–2010 and 2015. Then in 2020 they had a one off reunion for a BBC documentary.
The Shadows had 69 UK chart singles from the 1950s to the 2000s, 35 as The Shadows and 34 as Cliff Richard & The Shadows. Their most notable recording being Apache from 1960.
When appearing with Cliff Richard please use Cliff Richard & The Shadows.
