Biography
The Menzingers originally formed after the dissolution of Bob And The Sagets, a band local to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania. With the addition of Greg Barnett the band recorded a demo/self-released album "A Lesson In The Abuse Of Information Technology" in 2006. Shortly thereafter they were signed by Go-Kart Records and re-recorded the songs from "A Lesson" and re-released their album with the addition of some new tracks. At the Fest VII in Gainesville
The Arc of The Menzingers
The pivots — what forced The Menzingers to reinvent.
The Scranton Basement Years
Before the Epitaph deal, the band was self-releasing material and tour-managing themselves in a beat-up van. Working with local engineer Jesse Cannon on Chamberlain Waits, they captured a transitional, hyper-caffeinated punk sound. This era is defined by raw vocal strain, frantic tempos, and a complete lack of studio polish. You can hear the urgency of a band trying to escape their hometown before the factory gates close on them.
The Allison Renaissance
In 2011, the band relocated to Atlas Studios in Chicago to work with Matt Allison, the producer behind seminal records by Alkaline Trio and Lawrence Arms. Allison stripped away the metalcore-adjacent double-time drumming and forced the band to focus on mid-tempo dynamics and massive, ringing guitar chords. The result was On the Impossible Past, a record that defined the Rust Belt punk sound. The guitars suddenly had room to breathe, anchoring Barnett’s literary narratives in a wall of warm, analog distortion.
The Slick Stadium Push
By the late 2010s, the band teamed up with producer Will Yip at Studio 4 to chase a bigger, more expansive sound. Yip polished the rough edges, layered the acoustic guitars, and pushed the vocals right to the front of the mix on After the Party. While the songwriting remained sharp, the grit of the early days was replaced by a clean, radio-ready sheen. It divided the old-heads but secured their spot as festival headliners.
Influences
- The Bouncing Souls — The Souls took the band on tour early on, released a split 7-inch with them, and essentially mentored them in the Tri-State punk scene. You hear it in the gang-vocal anthems and the way both bands romanticize mundane suburban hangouts.
- Alkaline Trio — The band hired producer Matt Allison specifically because they wanted the dark, dry guitar tones he captured on early Alkaline Trio records. The influence is unmistakable in Eric Keen's melodic, driving bass lines that carry the melody while the guitars slash over the top.
- The Clash — Tom May has frequently cited London Calling as the blueprint for how a punk band can expand its sonic palette without losing its edge. The Menzingers channel this in their occasional use of ska-adjacent upstrokes and their sharp, class-conscious lyricism.
- Against Me! — The Menzingers spent their formative years opening for Laura Jane Grace's outfit, learning how to project acoustic-bred folk-punk intensity into massive rock venues. You hear this in Greg Barnett's raw, throat-tearing vocal delivery on acoustic-led intros.
- Bruce Springsteen — Barnett has openly admitted to obsessing over Darkness on the Edge of Town during the writing of their landmark albums. The lyrical themes of broken-down cars, diner parking lots, and dead-end jobs are straight out of the E Street playbook.
