Biography

Campbell kept this band in the garage for nearly two decades while the Heartbreakers were filling stadiums, treating it like a clubhouse to blow off steam without three trucks of arena lighting. When Tom died in 2017, the clubhouse became the only house left standing. So he finally hauled the gear into his home studio, plugged his battered Duesenberg into a small Fender Tweed, and cut the debut like a guy who had zero interest in being precious about his legacy. The Knobs don't do anthems built for eighty thousand people holding up phones. Campbell's voice is weathered, rough around the edges, and nowhere near the soaring drawl people spent forty years getting used to, but the guitar tone is completely unvarnished. It's bar-band rock cut by a guy who wrote some of the tightest riffs in American radio history and decided he'd rather end his career sweating in small clubs.

The Arc of Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs

The pivots — what forced Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs to reinvent.

  1. Out of the Garage

After decades of treating the Knobs as an unrecorded side gig between Heartbreakers tours, Campbell pulled the trigger with 2020's Wreckless Abandon. Cut largely live on the floor with minimal studio sheen, the record leaned on straight-ahead four-on-the-floor rhythms and dirt-simple riffs. You can hear a man refusing to make a pristine prestige record, opting instead for a sweaty, scuffed-up debut that shook off the stadium gloss.

  2. Hitting the Rhythm

By 2022's External Combustion and 2024's Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, the Knobs turned from a grief-clearing outlet into a functioning road machine. Campbell opened up the writing, dialing in swampy groove, bar-band boogie, and narrative character sketches that let him lean into his rasp rather than hide it. The records got tighter and dialed down the sheer volume in favor of dynamic grit, letting the dual guitars lock into pocket grooves that felt earned on stage.

  3. The Late-Career Charge

Leading into 2026's Mission Of Mercy, Campbell solidified the band as its own distinct chapter rather than a lingering footnote to his past. The songwriting tightened into lean, sharp garage rock that completely abandoned any obligation to sound like a legacy act playing the old cards. It sounds like an outfit running on pure road instinct, cutting tracks fast before the grease cools off.

Influences

  • The Rolling Stones — Campbell spent decades studying Keith Richards' open-G tuning and cut direct homages to their loose, swaggering groove. You hear the Exile on Main St. dirt across tracks like 'Wreckless Abandon' where rhythm and lead trade off without a seam. He never hides the fact that their late-sixties run is his tonal north star.
  • Chuck Berry — The double-stop intro lick that anchors half of Campbell's catalog traces directly to Berry's Chess Records output. The Dirty Knobs live entirely inside Berry's syncopated rhythm-and-blues swing, especially on the up-tempo barnburners. It is rock and roll reduced down to two fingers and a clean push.
  • The Byrds — Before the Heartbreakers even existed, Campbell was obsessing over Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker 12-string chime. Even with the Knobs pushing raw distortion, Campbell's chord voicings and melodic arpeggios carry that exact mid-sixties California jangle. You can hear that ringing counterpoint buried under the overdrive.
  • J.J. Cale — Cale's back-porch, behind-the-beat Tulsa sound is the template for Campbell's laid-back rhythm playing and talk-sing vocal phrasing. On slower Knobs numbers, Campbell pulls the tempo back into that hypnotic, ticking-clock pocket Cale perfected. It proves restraint is heavier than speed.
  • Muddy Waters — Campbell has repeatedly credited the Chess blues roster for teaching him how to make a single slide lick carry the entire weight of a chorus. That distorted, stinging slide work cuts right through the center of the Knobs' dirtiest barroom tracks. It's raw electric Chicago blues stripped of all polite studio manners.
