Biography
The Agnes Circle is a musical project consisting of Florian Voytek on Vocals & Guitar & Rachael Redfern on Bass. The band was formed in March of 2015 after LA native Florian arrived in London in 2015 via Brooklyn. Following the atmosphere displayed earlier on their debut EP Modern Idea—Florian and Rachael draw further on elements of English post-punk and French cold wave—showcasing a mastery of “Touching Pop” that would sit well at home on a Lively Arts compilation in their premiere the track Martial Love.
The Arc of The Agnes Circle
The pivots — what forced The Agnes Circle to reinvent.
The Avant! Records Arrival
The band established their blueprint early with the Modern Idea EP, landing on the Italian label Avant! Records which had already become a lighthouse for the new wave of dark electronics. By leaning into the stark, monochromatic production common to the label’s roster, Voytek’s chorus-heavy guitar lines were given enough air to sound massive without losing their edge. It was a calculated introduction that traded garage-rock warmth for a clinical, metropolitan chill. You can hear the lack of a human drummer in the way the songs never breathe or swing, they just march.
The Full-Length Finality
Some Vague Desire arrived in 2016 as a more claustrophobic and refined version of their initial output. Redfern’s bass moved even further into the foreground, providing the melodic hook while the vocals retreated deeper into the mix. This wasn't a play for the charts; it was an exercise in tension, ditching the brighter synth flourishes of their peers for something more skeletal. The record essentially closed the book on the project, serving as a definitive statement on the genre’s resurgence before the duo vanished from the release schedule entirely.
Influences
- The Chameleons — Florian Voytek has specifically cited Mark Burgess and company as the primary blueprint for the band's melodic sensibilities. You hear it in the layered, shimmering guitar delays that provide a sense of scale to otherwise intimate songs. It’s the sound of the suburbs turned into an anthem.
- Joy Division — The band’s reliance on the high-register, melodic bass style is a direct descendant of Peter Hook’s work on records like Closer. Rachael Redfern’s playing isn't just rhythm; it carries the tune while the guitar handles the atmosphere. This is the foundation of their entire structural approach.
- The Sound — Adrian Borland’s influence is all over the urgent, desperate vocal delivery found on Some Vague Desire. The Agnes Circle mirrored that specific brand of British melancholia that felt more grounded and less theatrical than their goth-rock contemporaries. It’s the difference between wearing a costume and actually feeling the rot.
- The Sisters of Mercy — The use of the drum machine isn't just a convenience; it’s an aesthetic choice heavily informed by Andrew Eldritch’s 'Doktor Avalanche.' It provides that relentless, robotic 4/4 pulse that never wavers for a second. That mechanical rigidity is what makes the guitar melodies feel so much more fragile.
- Asylum Party — The French 'Coldwave' scene of the late 80s provided the specific tonal palette of grey, washed-out synth and guitar textures. You can hear the DNA of their track 'Julia' in the way The Agnes Circle builds tension through repetition. It's a mood-first approach where the vibe is the hook.
