Biography
SLIFT is a psychedelic rock band from Toulouse, France. The current lineup consists Jean Fossat on guitar, synth and vocals, Rémi Fossat on bass and vocals and Canek Flores on drums, percussions and farfisa. They have released one full-length album, "UMMON" in 2020 and two EPs, "Space Is The Key" in 2017 and "La Planète Inexplorée" in 2018.
The Arc of SLIFT
The pivots — what forced SLIFT to reinvent.
The Garage Spacetrip
Between Space Is the Key and La Planète inexplorée, the band operated as a high-octane garage trio focused on the immediate crunch of the fuzz pedal. They were still tethered to the Earth, playing short, sharp riffs that leaned heavily on the 60s psych revival but with a faster, punkier tempo. You can hear the limitations of the smaller rooms they were playing in the tight, dry production of these early sessions. It was the sound of a band learning how to lock in before they tried to blow the roof off.
The Ummon Ascension
Everything changed when they decided to go wide and cinematic for the Ummon sessions, shifting toward a progressive, stoner-metal architecture. They moved away from the 3-minute garage blast and started writing twenty-minute suites that required Rémi Fossat’s bass to act as a percussive anchor while the guitars explored feedback loops. This is where the Farfisa and synthesizers became essential, filling the gaps between the riffs with a cold, cosmic atmosphere. It transformed them from a regional psych act into a global force for anyone who missed the days when records had to be heard in one sitting.
The Sub Pop Shift
Signing to Sub Pop for the release of ILION signaled a move toward even more complex, choral arrangements and massive production values. The raw, basement hiss was replaced by a pristine, crushing wall of sound that highlighted the interplay between Canek Flores’ drumming and the Fossat brothers' increasingly technical compositions. They began incorporating more vocal harmonies and structured movements, leaning into a sound that owes as much to avant-garde jazz as it does to heavy metal. It’s the sound of a band that finally has the budget to match the scale of their ambition.
Influences
- Hawkwind — The band has cited Hawkwind as the primary blueprint for their 'space rock' identity and even covered 'Silver Machine' during their early live sets. You hear it in the relentless, motorik drive and the way they use synthesizers to create a constant, swirling background hum. It’s the foundation for their entire cosmic-warrior aesthetic.
- Can — The Fossat brothers have frequently pointed to the Krautrock legends when discussing the hypnotic, repetitive structures of their longer jams. The influence is undeniable in Canek Flores’ drumming, which often favors a steady, unwavering pulse over flashy fills. It’s what keeps their longest tracks from falling into aimless noodling.
- The Stooges — Before they went prog, Slift was obsessed with the raw power of Ron Asheton’s guitar tone and the band's primal energy. You can still hear that DNA in the aggressive, percussive way Jean Fossat attacks his guitar during the heavier sections of 'Ilion.' It’s the 'Fun House' grit applied to a sci-fi concept.
- King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard — Slift toured with the Australian psych-juggernaut early on and has credited them with showing how a DIY band can build a massive, lore-heavy universe. The influence shows up in their rapid-fire release schedule and the way they link songs across albums into a single narrative arc. It’s about the work ethic as much as the delay pedals.
- Neu! — The band’s use of the 'Apache' beat and minimalist repetition is a direct lift from the Klaus Dinger school of percussion. In tracks like 'Hyperion,' the influence is clear—they strip away the fuzz for a moment to let a clean, driving rhythm take over. It provides the necessary contrast to their usual wall-of-sound approach.
