The Arc of Skinny Molly

The pivots — what forced Skinny Molly to reinvent.

  1. The Dual-Axe Foundation

Bringing Dave Hlubek into the fold changed the DNA of the band from a side project into a legitimate continuation of the Jacksonville guitar army tradition. You hear Hlubek’s DNA all over the early shows and the first record, providing that heavy, overdriven weight that defined Molly Hatchet’s peak. It wasn't just about playing fast; it was about two guys who knew how to weave lead lines without stepping on each other’s toes. This era ended when Hlubek headed back to the actual Molly Hatchet, leaving Estes to redefine the band's center of gravity.

  2. The Post-Hlubek Grind

When Jay Johnson joined up from the Rossington Band, the sound leaned harder into the road-dog reality of the 21st-century Southern rock circuit. 'Here for a Good Time' in 2014 stripped away the pressure of living up to the Hatchet name and focused on tighter songwriting and punchier hooks. They stopped trying to be a tribute to their own resumes and started sounding like a power trio with an extra engine. This was the moment they proved Skinny Molly could survive as its own entity rather than just a collection of former members.

Influences

  • Lynyrd SkynyrdEstes was a member during the 'Twenty' era and explicitly formed this band to keep that specific three-guitar attack alive. You hear it in the interlocking riffs and the blue-collar lyrical perspective. It is the literal foundation of his playing style.
  • Molly HatchetDave Hlubek co-founded Skinny Molly and brought the heavier, boogie-metal edge of the Hatchet sound to their debut. The band name itself is a portmanteau of Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet. It’s not a subtle tribute; it’s a direct lineage.
  • The Rossington BandJay Johnson came directly out of Gary Rossington’s post-Skynyrd project to join Skinny Molly. He brought that specific brand of melodic, slightly more polished Southern rock guitar work to the later records. It softened the edges of their earlier, more aggressive sound.
  • The OutlawsThe band has frequently covered 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' in the style of The Outlaws' high-speed guitar clinic. The influence shows up in the 'Florida Guitar Army' approach to extended, harmony-drenched solos. They trade licks with the same breathless velocity.
  • BlackfootThe raw, heavy-bottomed stomp of Rickey Medlocke’s crew is the blueprint for the 'No Good Deed' sessions. They prioritize the hard-rock side of the Southern equation over the country-rock side. It's about the Marshall stack, not the pedal steel.
