Biography
Rita Coolidge (born May 1, 1945, in Lafayette, Tennessee) is an American Singer. Coolidge's early career was as a backing vocalist, for artists such as Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, and Leon Russell. Her performance of "Superstar" on the Cocker/Russell Mad Dogs and Englishmen album helped gain her attention. She became known as "The Delta Lady" and inspired Leon Russell to write a song of the same name for her. It was during this time that she met Kris Kristofferson; the two married in 1973.
The Arc of Rita Coolidge
The pivots — what forced Rita Coolidge to reinvent.
The Delta Session Queen
Before she had a solo contract, she was the glue holding the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour together. She arrived at A&M with a heavy Memphis influence and a circle of friends that included Stephen Stills and the Delaney & Bonnie crew. Her first few records, especially 'Nice Feelin'', are loose, swampy affairs tracked with session giants like Donald 'Duck' Dunn. You hear the heat of the South in those grooves before the California studio polish took over.
The Kristofferson Duets
Marrying Kris Kristofferson in '73 shifted the orbit from Memphis soul to Nashville-via-Malibu country-rock. They cut 'Full Moon' and 'Breakaway' as a duo, winning Grammys while their marriage became public property. The production got cleaner and the stakes got higher, moving her away from the back-room vibe of her debut into a more structured, radio-ready format. It’s the sound of two massive stars trying to find a middle ground between outlaw country and pop stardom.
The Platinum Pivot
Producer David Anderle leaned hard into the adult contemporary market for 1977's 'Anytime... Anywhere', and the result was a three-million-selling juggernaut. They stripped away the Southern dirt in favor of a smooth, professional gloss that defined late-seventies L.A. pop. While 'We're All Alone' was a monster hit, it traded her gospel-inflected power for a more restrained, commercial delivery. This was the era where she became a household name but lost the 'Delta Lady' edge.
Influences
- The Staple Singers — Coolidge grew up singing in her father’s church and has cited Mavis Staples as her primary vocal blueprint. You hear it in the way she lays behind the beat on 'Born under a Bad Sign'. She doesn't over-sing; she lets the vibrato do the heavy lifting just like Mavis.
- Ray Charles — She spent her formative years obsessed with Ray’s ability to bridge the gap between country and R&B. That crossover DNA is all over her early A&M records where she covers Neil Young and soul standards in the same breath. It's the 'Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music' playbook applied to the seventies.
- Delaney & Bonnie — She toured as a backing vocalist for them in 1969 and learned the art of the 'ensemble' vocal. The loose, communal atmosphere of those shows directly informed the tracking of her self-titled debut. Without Bonnie Bramlett’s mentorship, Rita doesn't find that specific blue-eyed soul pocket.
- Brenda Lee — Coolidge has pointed to Lee as one of the first artists she heard who could handle a torch song with real muscle. You can hear that influence in the phrasing on her more ballad-heavy tracks like 'I Believe in You'. It's that Nashville phrasing hidden inside a pop structure.
- Peggy Lee — The cool, detached precision of Peggy Lee is the secret sauce in Rita’s late-seventies hits. When she covered 'Fever', she wasn't just doing a standard; she was channeling the smoky, understated delivery that Lee perfected. It’s about the notes you don't hit.
