Biography
Raging Slab is a hard/southern rock band from New York, New York, USA, that was formed in 1983.
The band was formed by the guitarists Greg Strzempka and Elyse Steinman in New York and last active in 2017.
In 1987 the group recorded their first album, Assmaster, released on the New Jersey label Buy Our Records with cover art by Marvel Comics artists Pat Redding and Pete Ciccone. In 1988 they added a third guitarist, Mark Middleton, and released their second album, ‘True Death’.
In 1989 they signed with RCA Records on a multi-record contract; they recorded their third album ‘Raging Slab’, produced by Daniel Rey. Two further album recordings for RCA, ‘From a Southern Space’ and ‘Freeburden’ (the latter with producer Michael Beinhorn) were rejected by the label and Def American bought out the remainder of their contract with RCA.
In 1993 their Def American debut, ‘Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert’ was released. The following year the band toured Europe in support of Texas and others; in England then-drummer Paul Sheehan suffered knee injuries and the group curtailed its tour. Recordings for a second Def American (now American Recordings) album’ Black Belt in Boogie’, were rejected by Rick Rubin, who reportedly told the group he "didn't hear any songs" on it. Middleton then left the band, citing "personal problems".
The group recorded its next album ‘Sing Monkey, Sing!’ on American Recordings. The label ended its distribution relationship with Warner Bros. Records; this and a legal disagreement about them releasing the group from its contract resulted in the start of legal proceedings by the band but they opted instead to wait out the remainder of their contract. ‘Sing Monkey, Sing!’ was sold to the Colombia Record and Tape Club.
From 2000, the group was free to record and release music again; tracks began to appear on compilation albums. In 2001 they released 'The Dealer' on independent label Tee Pee Records. The group toured the U.S., Canada and Europe that year and, on their return, began to record a new album; this album ‘Pronounced: Eat Shit’ was released in 2002, again on Tee Pee Records.
After the release and European tour for ‘Pronounced: Eat Shit’, the band was on hiatus, later announcing that bassist Alec Morton was suffering from congestive heart failure. Strzempka joined Swedish southern-metallers Backdraft (later known as 'Odin Grange') in 2003. In 2004, drummer Niklas Matsson and bassist Mats Rydström joined Raging Slab for a short tour of the US and the recording of a new record; this again was not released.
In 2017, Strzempka announced the death of his guitar partner and wife, Steinman. During the last 3 ½ years of her life they had recorded new music along with Morton and Dale Crover. This was released in 2020 as ‘Sister Slab and The Boogie Coalition: Vol. 1’
