Biography

Pearl Charles (born May 11, 1991) is an American singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. She aims to embody California rock and roll and, as a figure in the local music scene (and beyond) she began touring as a member of old-timey Americana duo The Driftwood Singers, at age 18, followed by a lengthy stint drumming and singing in garage-pop band, The Blank Tapes. The Blank Tapes toured extensively and earned accolades from Rolling Stone and The New Yorker for their sunny lo-fi surf rock.

The Arc of Pearl Charles

The pivots — what forced Pearl Charles to reinvent.

  1. The Garage-Folk Apprenticeship

Before going solo, Charles was the secret weapon in the L.A. psych-garage scene, contributing percussion and vocals to the sun-drenched lo-fi sounds of The Blank Tapes. This era was defined by cheap gear, DIY spaces, and a heavy emphasis on the communal folk-rock spirit of Southern California. You can hear this foundational scuzz on her early Burger Records tapes, where the songwriting is sharp but the production is still blissfully unrefined. It was the necessary bridge between being a band member and finding the confidence to front her own retro-fitted ship.

  2. The AM Gold Evolution

The shift happened when she traded the garage fuzz for the high-fidelity sparkle of the mid-70s airwaves. Bringing in Michael Rault as a collaborator and producer was the catalyst, moving her sound toward the sophisticated arrangements of ABBA and the Carpenters. This wasn't about stripping away her roots, but rather wrapping her cosmic country sensibilities in a layer of polyester disco-pop. The result was a sound that felt both expansive and claustrophobically catchy, characterized by tight harmonies and a newfound devotion to the groove.

Influences

  • The CarpentersCharles has explicitly cited Richard Carpenter’s meticulous arrangements as a blueprint for her vocal layering. You hear it in the sugary but melancholic stacks on 'Magic Mirror.' It’s that 'sadness in the sunshine' vibe they perfected.
  • The ByrdsThe 12-string jangle and country-rock pivot of the 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' era is baked into her DNA. Her early solo work carries that same DNA of blending psychedelic exploration with Nashville traditionalism. No-bullshit Laurel Canyon heritage.
  • ABBAShe’s gone on record about the influence of the Swedish giants on her rhythm sections and pop sensibilities. The driving, four-on-the-floor disco beat of 'Only a Fool' is a direct nod to the 'Arrival' era. Pop craft treated with absolute seriousness.
  • Linda RonstadtThe ability to jump from country-rock to sophisticated pop standards without losing credibility is the Ronstadt playbook. Charles mimics that versatility, specifically the late-70s period where the denim started to get a little more glitter on it. Pure West Coast vocal authority.
  • Fleetwood MacThe Buckingham-Nicks era production—specifically the interplay between organic instruments and studio polish—is her North Star. You hear it in the way her tracks breathe even when they’re heavily produced. It’s that high-stakes, high-fidelity relationship drama sound.
