Biography

Passion Pit are an American electronica band from Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, formed in 2007. The band consists solely of Michael Angelakos (lead vocals, keyboards), joined live by Chris Hartz (drums), Aaron Harrison Folb (bass/synthesizers), Giuliano Pizzulo (guitar/synthesizers), and Ray Suen (guitar/synthesizers). "Passion Pit" was a vocabulary word used in a class Michael took in school. The band called their name from the Variety Slanguage Dictionary

The Arc of Passion Pit

The pivots — what forced Passion Pit to reinvent.

  1. The Bedroom Apology

What started as the Chunk of Change EP was never intended for the public, recorded primarily by Angelakos using a basic DAW setup and a cheap microphone. The sound was lo-fi and frantic, rooted in the limitations of consumer-grade electronics rather than professional studio gloss. You can hear the lack of polish in the vocal clipping and the raw, unrefined samples that defined early indietronica. It wasn't a band yet; it was one guy trying to fix a relationship through a MIDI controller.

  2. The Chris Zane Maximalism

Moving into a professional environment for Manners and Gossamer changed the stakes when producer Chris Zane pushed Angelakos toward a massive, wall-of-sound approach. They spent weeks at Gigantic Studios in New York, obsessively layering analog synths and hundreds of vocal tracks to create a dense, impenetrable pop sheen. This era moved the project away from the basement and into the festival circuit, trading the grit for high-definition digital precision. The result was a sound so polished it almost felt synthetic, despite being born from total emotional chaos.

  3. The Solo Independence

After the touring cycle for Kindred, the traditional band structure dissolved and Angelakos reclaimed Passion Pit as a strictly solo venture under his own Wishart Group label. The 2017 release Tremendous Sea of Love was uploaded directly to YouTube and SoundCloud, bypassing the major label machine entirely to prioritize mental health advocacy. The production became more experimental and less concerned with the 'Sleepyhead' radio formula. It was a deliberate retreat from the industry grind that had nearly killed him during the Gossamer years.

Influences

  • The Postal ServiceAngelakos has cited Ben Gibbard’s collaborative project as a fundamental blueprint for his own marriage of laptop beats and vulnerable lyrics. You hear it in the stuttering electronic percussion and the way the high-register vocals sit right on top of the mix. It’s the direct ancestor of the entire 2008 indie-dance movement.
  • The Beach BoysThe obsession with complex vocal harmonies and Brian Wilson’s studio perfectionism is all over the layers in Gossamer. Angelakos specifically aimed for the 'California Girls' grandeur while dealing with his own psychological isolation in the studio. He traded the surfboards for synthesizers but kept the baroque pop structure intact.
  • Fleetwood MacAngelakos told Pitchfork that Tusk was a massive influence on the frantic, cocaine-edged energy of his early songwriting. The influence is evident in the way he uses rhythmic shifts and unexpected instrumental bursts to disrupt a standard pop song. It's the sound of a big-budget record trying to be as weird as possible.
  • Randy NewmanHe’s gone on record praising Newman’s ability to write devastatingly sad lyrics inside catchy, almost jaunty arrangements. You hear this DNA in tracks like 'Take a Walk,' where a bright melody disguises a grim story about financial ruin. It’s the art of the sugar-coated pill.
  • The KnifeThe Swedish duo's use of pitched-up, distorted vocals and aggressive synth textures provided the technical roadmap for the more abrasive moments on Manners. Before everyone was doing it, Passion Pit was following The Knife's lead in making electronics sound organic and terrifying at the same time. It’s that sharp, biting edge that kept them from being just another synth-pop act.
