Biography

Paatos is a Swedish rock band that was formed in 2000 by Reine Fiske(followed up by Peter Nylander), and Stefan Dimle (both previous members of Landberk and current members of Morte Macabre), Petronella Nettermalm, Ricard Nettermalm(Puckspony) and Johan Wallen. Paatos is usually classified as progressive rock, albeit influenced by bands such as Portishead and Massive Attack. Paatos has been categorized as Melancholic Post-Rock. This could be a description as good as any other.

The Arc of Paatos

The pivots — what forced Paatos to reinvent.

  1. The Post-Landberk Awakening

After Landberk called it quits, the DNA of that band mutated into the first Paatos recordings with a focus on sparse, jazz-inflected arrangements. Reine Fiske brought his signature fuzzed-out guitar work to the debut 'Timeloss', while the rhythm section stayed locked into a heavy, repetitive groove. You can hear the transition from 70s worship to a modern, colder atmosphere as they realized Petronella’s voice could carry the melody better than any Moog lead. This era is defined by that 'Tea' single—ten minutes of slow-burn tension that set the template for everything else.

  2. The Porcupine Tree Orbit

Signing with Inside Out and getting Steven Wilson to mix 'Kallocain' changed their trajectory from a local Swedish curiosity to a global prog-revival fixture. The production got cleaner, the drums got tighter, and the songs started following more traditional structures instead of drifting into the ether. Having Wilson behind the board gave the record a hi-fi sheen that highlighted the cello work, but it also smoothed over some of the grit that made their debut feel dangerous. It’s the sound of a band realized in a proper studio environment, for better or worse.

  3. The Independent Pivot

After the major prog labels did their thing, the band moved toward a self-contained unit for 'Breathing' and beyond, embracing a more minimalist approach. Ricard Nettermalm took over more of the production duties, leaning into a sound that felt more like an intimate live session than a sprawling concept piece. The tracks became shorter and the atmosphere shifted from dark symphonic rock to a more personal, experimental pop sensibility. This was the band shedding the 'prog' baggage to see if the songs could stand up without the Mellotron safety net.

Influences

  • King CrimsonThe band has cited 'In the Court of the Crimson King' as a foundational text for their use of the Mellotron and jagged guitar intervals. You hear it most clearly in the heavy, ominous flute-and-keyboard layering on 'Timeloss'. It's the blueprint for their specific brand of symphonic dread.
  • PortisheadPetronella has explicitly mentioned the Bristol scene as an influence on her vocal phrasing and the band's use of space. The trip-hop beat structures on the 'Kallocain' album are a direct nod to 'Dummy'. They took the 'Blue Lines' mood and injected it with Scandinavian prog DNA.
  • LandberkSince three members were in Landberk, the lineage is literal rather than just stylistic. You hear the same melancholic, minor-key jazz-rock tendencies on 'Riktigt Äkta' mirrored in early Paatos tracks. It wasn't a new start as much as a necessary evolution after Landberk's 'Indian Summer'.
  • AnekdotenThe bands shared members and a rehearsal space in the early 90s, fostering a specific Swedish 'dark prog' sound. That heavy, distorted bass tone that kicks off many Paatos tracks is a direct descendant of the Nicklas Barker school of fuzz. They were breathing the same stale studio air for a decade.
  • BjörkPetronella’s ability to jump from a whisper to a controlled belt has been frequently compared to 'Post'-era Björk in contemporary reviews and interviews. The way 'Sensum' uses electronic textures beneath organic vocals mirrors the 'Homogenic' approach to arrangement. It’s about the contrast between the cold machine and the human voice.
