Biography

Nuno Canavarro (born November 15, 1962, in Porto, Portugal) is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and pioneer of Portuguese electronic and avant-garde music. He began his musical journey studying classical piano before pursuing an architecture degree in Porto. In the early 1980s, Canavarro entered the Portuguese pop-rock scene, playing keyboards for the new wave band Street Kids and later collaborating with the pop group Delfins. His definitive artistic breakthrough came in 1988 with the release of his solo debut, Plux Quba, on the independent label Ama Romanta. Utilizing early samplers, vocal fragments, and concrete sounds, the album became a holy grail of electroacoustic music. It achieved international cult status after being championed and reissued in 1999 by Jim O'Rourke on his Moikai label, heavily influencing prominent IDM and electronic acts like Mouse on Mars.In 1991, Canavarro collaborated with Carlos Maria Trindade (of Madredeus) to record Mr. Wollogallu, a landmark ambient and fourth-world music album. Beyond his studio albums, Canavarro has focused extensively on composing film scores for Portuguese cinema (such as Fintar o Destino and O Gotejar da Luz) and has also directed short films.
