Biography

[From myepic.net] The story that is My Epic has been in the works for several years. The whole process started in 1998 when Aaron, Jesse, and Matt first started playing together in what quickly became their first band, The Right Wing Conspiracy, later known as Shaddai. Through their experiences together, the five boys in Shaddai grew as musicians and as a band, and by the summer of 2004, after playing shows ranging from their home town of Fredericksburg

The Arc of My Epic

The pivots — what forced My Epic to reinvent.

  1. The Facedown Foundations

Signing with Facedown Records in 2008 anchored them to a scene defined by aggressive breakdowns, but 'I Am After' showed they were looking for something more cinematic. They were using delayed leads and clean, soaring vocals that felt closer to an arena rock band than a metalcore outfit. It was an awkward fit for the label's typical roster, but it earned them a cult following of listeners who wanted melody without the radio-pop cheese.

  2. The Goldman Sessions

Teaming up with producer Matt Goldman for 'Yet' changed the geometry of their sound by introducing a level of chaotic precision they hadn't touched before. Goldman pushed the band to embrace more complex time signatures and layered textures that filled every corner of the stereo field. You can hear the shift in how the drums are captured—massive, room-heavy, and driving the melodic shifts rather than just keeping time.

  3. The Concept Pivot

When they dropped 'Behold' and followed it with the 'Viscera' and 'Ultraviolet' EPs, the band moved away from traditional LP structures to focus on thematic, high-concept releases. They started leaning harder into atmospheric electronics and fuzz-drenched bass tones, moving closer to a post-rock aesthetic. It was a move toward maturity that shed the last remnants of their early scene associations, proving they could sustain tension without the need for high-screams.

Influences

  • ThriceAaron Stone has cited 'Vheissu' as a massive touchstone for how to transition from a heavy band to an experimental one. You hear it in the way My Epic balances aggressive low-end with delicate, delayed guitar melodies. It's the blueprint for their entire middle-era trajectory.
  • Sigur RósThe band frequently pointed to the Icelandic group's use of atmosphere and scale during the 'Behold' sessions. They adopted that slow-build tension where the reverb acts like a fifth member of the band. It turned their sound from a tight room vibe into something that feels like it’s being played in a cathedral.
  • BlindsideThe Swedish influence is all over their vocal harmonies and the way they stack clean singing over chaotic guitar riffs. You can catch the direct lineage of Christian Lindskog’s phrasing in Stone’s more melodic moments. It’s that specific brand of European post-hardcore that values soul over shredding.
  • Sunny Day Real EstateThe DNA of second-wave emo is the foundation for their rhythm section's approach to dynamics. They take the quiet-loud-quiet formula and apply it to a much heavier sonic palette. It's the reason their softer moments feel just as high-stakes as the loud ones.
  • UnderoathSharing the same production orbit with Matt Goldman made this connection inevitable, especially during the 'Yet' era. They took the technical dissonance of 'Define the Great Line' and stripped away the electronics to see if they could make it work with just raw instrumentation. It’s the same sense of controlled frantic energy.
