Biography
macseal is an American emo / math rock band from Farmingdale, New York, formed in 2013. Their unique ability to craft hook-laden earworms that also feature relatable lyrical narratives is uncanny and is impressively matched by their electrifying live shows. They released their first EP Macseal EP in 2015, followed by Yeah, No, I Know in 2017 & Map It Out in 2018. New album 'Super Enthusiast' out now on 6131 Records. Bandcamp Twitter Instagram Facebook
The Arc of Macseal
The pivots — what forced Macseal to reinvent.
The Bedroom Math Phase
From the self-titled debut through 'etc.', the band operated on the raw energy of the Long Island DIY scene, characterized by shaky vocal takes and frantic guitar work recorded in non-professional spaces. This era is defined by its lack of polish, where the technicality of the riffs had to fight against the hiss of budget gear. You hear a band finding their footing by over-playing, cramming as many notes as possible into short, jittery bursts of energy that felt like they were barely holding together.
The Studio Refinement
When they hit 'Yeah, No, I Know,' the band moved into real studios and started caring about things like 'headroom' and 'vocal layering.' Working with engineers like Justin Pizzoferrato brought a beefier, more professional sound that separated the dual guitars into distinct channels rather than a muddy mess. This shift turned them from a basement curiosity into a tight, melodic machine that could actually translate their complex arrangements to a larger stage without losing the hook.
The Power-Pop Pivot
By the time 'Super Enthusiast' and 'Permanent Repeat' rolled around, the band traded the math-rock anxiety for a more expansive, pop-forward sensibility. They started prioritizing 4/4 structures and big, sugary choruses that felt more at home in the 90s alternative radio circuit than a VFW hall. The technical flourishes became accents rather than the main event, proving they could write a straight-up anthem without needing a weird time signature to justify it.
Influences
- American Football — The band has explicitly cited them as the blueprint for their clean, interlocking guitar melodies and melancholic lyricism. You hear it most in the open tunings and the way the two guitars weave around each other without ever stepping on the bass. It’s the gold standard for that mid-western-meets-Long-Island twinkle.
- The Get Up Kids — They’ve covered 'Holiday' and frequently mention the band as a primary influence for their pop-minded songwriting. The frantic energy of 'Something to Write Home About' is the direct ancestor to Macseal’s early uptempo tracks. It's the bridge between being a 'math' band and being an 'emo' band.
- Death Cab for Cutie — Ben Gibbard’s influence shows up in the vocal phrasing and the more introspective, suburban lyrical themes found on 'Super Enthusiast'. The clean, crisp production on their later records mirrors the sonic shift Chris Walla brought to early-2000s indie rock. It’s that specific brand of articulate, rhythmic melancholy.
- Weezer — The band has cited Rivers Cuomo's knack for the 'perfect pop song' as a guiding light for their more recent, polished material. You can hear the 'Blue Album' crunch in the power chords and the vocal harmonies on their later singles. It's the sound of a technical band finally embracing their love for big-budget choruses.
- Owen — Mike Kinsella’s solo project informed the more delicate, acoustic-driven moments in the Macseal catalog. The intricate finger-picking patterns on their softer tracks are a direct nod to the Kinsella school of guitar playing. It provides the necessary quiet contrast to their more aggressive math-rock outbursts.
