Biography
Discordant, elusive, and utterly hypnotic, Loop conjured a dark, trance-like spell that contrasted sharply with the prevailing British pop music trends of their time. Touching upon the likes of the Stooges and Can in their sonic template, they resurrected the concept of space rock for a new era in tandem with fellow travelers Spacemen 3, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance. Their initial run lasted only a few years during the late '80s and the start of the '90s
The Arc of Loop
The pivots — what forced Loop to reinvent.
The Garage Minimalists
Early on, the band was obsessed with the primitive thud of the Stooges and the repetitive stomp of the MC5. Hampson and Bex focused on a guitar sound that was essentially a wall of feedback held together by Neil Mackay’s distorted bass lines. Records like Heaven’s End weren't about melody; they were about the physical sensation of a chord being held until it vibrated your teeth loose. You hear it in the way the tracks never resolve, just grinding forward until the tape runs out.
The Cold Space Expansion
With the release of Fade Out, the production got leaner and the space between the notes started to matter as much as the noise. They moved away from the psych-rock tag and started leaning into a mechanical, almost industrial rigidity that felt more aligned with the burgeoning post-rock movement. The guitars became percussive tools rather than melodic ones, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere that peaked on A Gilded Eternity. It was the sound of a band perfecting a formula and then realizing they had nowhere left to go within those walls.
The Long Silence and Resurgence
After a twenty-year blackout where Hampson explored abstract electronics, the 2013 reunion wasn't a nostalgia trip but a refinement of the original mission. The lineup stabilized with Wayne Maskell on drums, bringing a motorik precision that made the new material sound like a high-end machine instead of a basement jam. Sonancy proved they hadn't lost the edge, swapping the loose fuzz of the eighties for a sharp, clinical distortion that felt entirely modern. It’s the same obsession with the loop, just executed with a veteran’s lack of mercy.
Influences
- The Stooges — Hampson has repeatedly cited Fun House as the ultimate blueprint for the band's existence. You hear it in the relentless, three-chord down-strokes and the refusal to let a riff die before it's been beaten into the dirt. It’s the raw power without the showmanship.
- Can — The band’s entire philosophy is built on the motorik beat perfected by Jaki Liebezeit. Every Loop record relies on that steady, unwavering 4/4 pulse that allows the guitars to spiral out of control without the song falling apart. It’s the science of repetition.
- Suicide — Loop covered 'Rocket USA' early on, signaling their debt to Alan Vega and Martin Rev’s terrifyingly minimalist electronic pulse. They took that cold, urban dread and translated it back onto distorted guitars. It gave their psych-rock a dangerous, synthetic edge.
- Glenn Branca — The influence of the New York No Wave guitar orchestras is all over Loop’s later, more architectural work. They stopped thinking about songs and started thinking about overtones and massive, shifting slabs of sound. It’s the high-art approach to heavy volume.
- The Velvet Underground — The DNA of 'Sister Ray' is the starting point for every long-form drone Loop ever recorded. They took the white light/white heat distortion and stripped away the lyrics until only the rhythmic friction remained. It’s the sound of the street converted into a feedback loop.
