The Arc of Lion

The pivots — what forced Lion to reinvent.

  1. The Scotti Brothers Era

After the Power Love EP made some noise in Japan, the band signed with Scotti Brothers and leaned into the high-production sheen of Dangerous Attraction. Doug Aldrich was pushing his gear to the limit, blending a classic Marshall roar with the hyper-speed alternate picking that defined the mid-80s guitar hero era. You can hear the struggle on that record between the label’s desire for a 'hit' and the band's natural inclination toward heavy, driving riffs that wouldn't have been out of place on an Iron Maiden B-side. It remains the definitive Lion document, capturing a moment when the L.A. sound still had some actual teeth left.

  2. The Angel City Fade

For the 1989 swan song, the band rerecorded several tracks from their debut EP and tried to harden their image to match the gritty street-metal trend. The production on Trouble in Angel City felt less like a major label push and more like a band digging in their heels against a changing tide. Mark Edwards’ drumming was as locked-in as ever, providing a massive foundation for Swan’s bluesier vocal runs, but the tragic injury to Edwards during the promotional cycle killed the band's touring capability. It wasn't a slow decline—it was a sudden, violent stop for a lineup that was technically superior to almost everyone else on the Strip.

Influences

  • WhitesnakeKal Swan has openly cited David Coverdale as a primary vocal blueprint. You hear it in the controlled grit of 'Power Love' and the way he attacks the bluesier intervals. It’s no coincidence Doug Aldrich eventually ended up playing for Coverdale years later.
  • Deep PurpleThe band's foundational DNA is rooted in the MK II and MK III lineups, specifically the heavy Hammond-organ-and-guitar interplay. Aldrich’s lead style on 'Dangerous Attraction' heavily borrows from Ritchie Blackmore’s neo-classical phrasing and aggressive vibrato. They were playing L.A. metal with an old-school British backbone.
  • Bad CompanyBefore Lion, Kal Swan fronted Tytan in the NWOBHM scene, where he took heavy cues from Paul Rodgers’ phrasing. The mid-tempo stompers on the 'Power Love' EP carry that same soulful, hard-rock swagger. They prioritized the groove over the glam-metal gallop.
  • Thin LizzyLion's penchant for harmonized guitar leads and the 'Trouble in Angel City' vibe points directly back to Phil Lynott’s songwriting. Aldrich and Swan have both referenced the dual-guitar attack as a core influence on their arrangement style. It’s hard rock with an emphasis on melody and twin-lead precision.
  • Led ZeppelinThe heavy, blues-based riffing of Jimmy Page is all over Aldrich’s rhythm work. You can hear the Zeppelin influence in the way they use light and shade between the acoustic intros and the distorted choruses. It gave their records a dynamic range most hair-metal bands lacked.
