Biography
German saxophonist, percussionist, bassist, flutist and composer, born June 26, 1949.
Jan Fride Wolbrandt and Hellmut Hattler were together with Pappert in a group called "Progressive Jazz Group Ulm". All members were still in school and Pappert played saxophone in the band. He went to Berlin and studied music, while he also played in Jazz bands. Around 1971, he joined the freshly founded band Kraan, which before existed as "Inzest".
After a short period in Berlin and a return to Ulm, Hattler had a dispute with the band, left and settled to Wintrup, near Paderborn, where he was invited by Progressive Rock band, a band from Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. The band lived at the farm in Wintrup as a community and the musicians invited the other musicians from Kraan, which led to a state, where the other Kraan members moved in, but at the same time, the band Erna Schmidt split and one after the other of their musicians left Wintrup. It turned out, that both bands were not much compatible to each other.
Kraan reformed in the rural area of Wintrup, they lived together in a community in this farm, which was built in the 5th century.
Pappert recorded all their albums until 1975, the last record with him in the lineup was "Let It Out (opens in a new tab). In 1976, Pappert left the band and never became a member of the band, disregarding some appearances as guest musician.
He was then part of the supergroup Liliental, but concentrated on his own solo project Alto from 1978. Also, he was guest musician on many contemporary bands. In 1982, he quit his project Alto and gave up being professional musician in 1985.
In that year, he co-founded a media agency called "Mixed Media" in Berlin, which focussed on advertisements and business presentations. Additionally, Pappert was still active as amateur saxophonist.
