Biography
Jen Rog was a band from Volendam, The Netherlands. In 1971 the group formed out of members from Alles & Coffin. Their first name was Progress. This included Jack Veerman (Dekker) (later BZN) and Theo van Scherpenseel (from 1975 onwards also better known as Specs Hildebrand. After Jack Veerman left the band, the band changed their name to Jen Rog in 1972. This occurred during the recording of their first single, "Devilish Mary / Oh, The Road (Netherlands 1972) (opens in a new tab)". The band name refers to Jen Rog, a Volendammer from the old days who almost never washed. In old age, this colorful character was admitted to a nursing home and was bathed. He died a few days later.
The initial lineup was Martin Veerman (vocals, drums), Peter Bergen (bass), Jaap Schilder (also known as Jaap de Witte) (vocals, guitar) (later 3JS), and Theo van Scherpenseel (vocals, guitar, piano, organ).
In 1975, Peter Bergen was replaced by Jaap Smit (ex-Fools), and Theo van Scherpenseel was replaced by two guitarists: Siem Schilder (better known as Polly) (also ex-Fools) and Leo Sanders. Leo left the band in 1977 and was not replaced. Siem Schilder (Polly) was replaced by Kees Dusink in 1978. Jaap Smit was replaced by Hubert Knuvelder in 1979. In 1984, Martin Veerman, Jaap Schilder (de Witte), along with Hubert Knuvelder and Evert Veerman (Jash), released a single under the name X-RAY.
After eight years, the last two singles were released in 1988. At that time, the band was primarily known in North Holland as a cover band. In 1992, Jen Rog received a new impetus with the addition of the then 15-year-old guitarist Jaap Kwakman (later 3JS). From this time on, Jen Rog stopped recording, but continued to perform in varying lineups.
In 1994, Martin Veerman and Jaap Schilder (de Witte) recorded a Dutch-language CD titled "De Tijd Staat Even Stil (Netherlands 1994) (opens in a new tab)", under the name Veerman & Schilder, which included 2 singles. Jaap Schilder (de Witte), who has been part of Jen Rog since the band's inception, started the band De Blauwe Bus / BlueBus around 1997 with Jaap Kwakman and Jan Dulles, named after Jen Rog's blue tour bus. Around 2005, BlueBus was renamed 3JS, often initially written as "de 3j's"
A number of former members also formed the band X-Rog for a short period in 2003.
In the summer of 2006, it was announced that Jen Rog was disbanding.
