German jazz composer, vibraphonist, flutist, bass clarinetist, and occasional saxophonist and pianist
Born August 31, 1937 in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany, died May 18, 2026 in Berlin.
Hampel was dedicated to free jazz in the 1960s, founding the label. Among others, he worked with John McLaughlin, Muruga Booker, Laurie Allan, Udo Lindenberg, Pierre Courbois, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Steve McCall, and Perry Robinson. In the 1970s, he formed the Galaxie Dream Band, who also had core member, vocalist Jeanne Lee, to whom Hampel was married. Their daughter is also a singer, Cavana Lee Hampel who he has worked. Hampel and Lee also released an album named after their daughter, "Cavana" (1982).
