Biography
Jason Flom signed them off a live video, pushed them through the Lava machine, and suddenly four kids from Michigan were carrying the entire rock-is-back industry grift on their backs. The internet spent three years losing its collective mind over whether Josh Kiszka was ripping off Robert Plant or just reincarnating him without permission. Pitchfork famously gave them a 1.6 and treated the debut like a war crime, while arena tickets sold out in three minutes flat. They had the vintage Gibson SG, the tambourines, the suede fringe, and an unapologetic hunger for high-register shrieks and pentatonic riffs. Strip away the endless hot takes and the music is dead obvious about what it wants to be. They are a loud, road-dog power quartet playing direct blues-rock revival for kids who were not alive to see the seventies, tracked by producers trying to balance modern FM radio sheen with vintage room mics. They rode out the initial wave of brutal mockery by simply refusing to blink. Instead of crawling back to Michigan, they went out and hired top-shelf board ops to turn their throwback worship into something louder, weirder, and undeniably tight.

The Arc of Greta Van Fleet
The pivots — what forced Greta Van Fleet to reinvent.
The Rust Brothers and the Hype Storm
Lava threw the band into Blackbird Studio in Nashville with The Rust Brothers behind the console to pump out Anthem of the Peaceful Army. The industry wanted a stadium-rock savior and the critics wanted their heads on a fucking pike. The tracks doubled down on every Zeppelin comparison going, leaning heavy on Jake's cranked valve amps and Josh's full-throttle falsetto. It became a cultural lightning rod, moving massive units while polarizing every rock purist who walked into a shop.
Stripped Tape at RCA
They dumped the polished radio gloss and hired Dave Cobb to bottle lightning inside RCA Studio A in Nashville for Starcatcher. Cobb pushed them to cut live off the floor to capture raw room bleed, grit, and spontaneous mistakes. Josh pushed his throat into rougher, distorted overdrive while Danny Wagner hit the kit like an absolute heavyweight. The result sounded unvarnished, loose, and far closer to a blistering festival soundcheck than a commercial radio product.
Influences
- Led Zeppelin — The band spent years addressing the endless vocal comparisons in interviews, with Robert Plant himself even poking public fun at Josh's vocal tone. You hear it front and center in the wailing register on 'Highway Tune' and Jake's open-E blues riffing. No band in the modern era has walked closer to the Houses of the Holy template.
- Sam Cooke — Josh Kiszka routinely cited classic sixties soul as his original vocal blueprint long before he ever started shouting over distorted Marshalls. The band tracked a direct studio cover of Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come' on the 2017 double EP From the Fires. That gospel inflection and chest vibrato still slip through the seams on their slower cuts.
- Fairport Convention — Jake and Sam Kiszka have repeatedly documented their obsession with late-sixties British folk-rock pioneers in guitar features. The pastoral acoustic picking and medieval lyrical imagery across 'The Battle at Garden's Gate' pull straight from Richard Thompson's early playbook. It explains where the band gets their woodland-mystic acoustic leanings.
- Cream — Jake Kiszka cited Eric Clapton's late-sixties 'woman tone' and blues phrasing as the reason he picked up an electric guitar in the first place. You can hear Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker's hard-pushing rhythm dynamics in how Sam's bass and Danny's kick lock together on 'Safari Song'. They built their core rhythm section entirely on power-trio blues physics.
- Howlin' Wolf — The brothers grew up on their father's Chicago blues 45s, repeatedly pointing to Chess Records as the foundational record collection in their childhood house. The raw turnaround licks and guttural shouts on early tracks are classic Chester Burnett filtered through cranked American amplification. It's the root source of every dirty pentatonic run in their catalog.
