Biography

German bass player, vocalist and composer based in Berlin, born in 1952, died November 6, 2024 in Munich.
Hartwig met in the late 1960's, when they played together in a Folk duo called "Blues Machine" in West-Berlin. When three other musicians joined the duo in 1970 and 1971, they founded together the Krautrock band Karthago. This five-piece band came together in October 1971 and recorded its debut album. In the following time, Hartwig was also guest musician for other Berlin-based groups and projects.
After the initial success of their first two albums, Hartwig left Karthago in Summer 1974. After playing together with other local Rock bands, he rejoined Karthago as bassist again in 1976. He stayed until the band finally split in 1978.
After first contacts in the late 1970's, he first was part of the band of Roman Bunka, then Hartwig joined Embryo in Munich in 1981. His music was now more influenced by African rhythms, which also led to solo projects as "Futjimusic". Also in the 1980's, he had his project Die Wand An together. In 1987, Hartwig left Embryo.
