Biography

Firefall was a rock band that formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1975. It was founded by Rick Roberts, who had been in the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Jock Bartley, who had been Tommy Bolin's replacement in Zephyr. The band's biggest hit single, "You Are the Woman", peaked at #9 on the Billboard charts. Other hits include "Just Remember I Love You" (#11 in 1977), "Strange Way" (#11 in 1978), and "Staying with It" from 1981, with female vocalist Lisa Nemzo.

The Arc of Firefall

The pivots — what forced Firefall to reinvent.

  1. The Criteria Studios Gold Rush

From 1976 to 1977, the band rode a wave of massive commercial success by refining the loose, dusty country-rock of the early seventies into pristine, radio-friendly pop. Working with producer Jim Mason at Criteria Studios, they relied on David Muse's multi-instrumental woodwinds and Michael Clarke's steady, post-Byrds drumming to anchor their sound. The result was a pair of albums, Firefall and Luna Sea, characterized by immaculate vocal harmonies and tight acoustic guitar tracking. You hear this formula peak on 'Just Remember I Love You,' where the hook is completely dependent on the precision of the vocal blend.

  2. The Platinum Burnout

By 1978's Elan, the pressure to deliver another massive hit forced the band into expensive, fractured sessions with producers Tom Dowd and Ron Albert. The easygoing chemistry was replaced by creative division, with Roberts and Burnett writing in isolation from each other. Despite the album going platinum, the tracks felt increasingly sterile, trading their earlier organic warmth for slick, safety-first studio arrangements. The exhaustion is palpable across the tracklist, signaling the end of their cohesive band dynamic before the lineup completely shattered in 1980.

Influences

  • The ByrdsMichael Clarke was the original drummer for The Byrds, and Rick Roberts fronted the late-era version of the band after Gene Clark left. You hear this lineage in the chiming, twelve-string acoustic guitar foundations and the high, layered vocal arrangements on tracks like 'Cinderella.' It is the direct bridge between sixties folk-rock and late-seventies FM pop.
  • The Flying Burrito BrothersRick Roberts joined the Burritos in 1970 to replace Gram Parsons, writing much of their self-titled third album before recruiting Jock Bartley for the final touring version of the band. The country-rock blueprint of using pedal steel sensibilities on acoustic pop songs carried directly into Firefall's early arrangements. You can hear this rootsy, relaxed swing all over 'Mexico' from the debut album.
  • Stephen StillsJock Bartley played lead guitar in Stephen Stills' solo band, Manassas, right before Firefall came together. Stills' rhythmic acoustic strumming style and his approach to Latin-tinged acoustic rock heavily shaped Bartley's guitar work. This influence is unmistakable in the driving acoustic groove and conga accents of 'It Doesn't Matter,' a song Roberts actually co-wrote with Stills.
  • SpiritBassist Mark Andes was a founding member of Spirit, bringing a progressive West Coast rock pedigree to the rhythm section. His fluid, melodic basslines kept the band's softer ballads from sounding completely flat. You can hear his distinctive, moving low-end work driving 'You Are the Woman.'
  • The BeatlesThe band openly modeled their three-part vocal stacking on the Lennon-McCartney-Harrison harmonies, later recording a full tribute album to them in 2006. The hook structures and vocal counter-melodies on their early records are textbook British Invasion pop wrapped in Colorado acoustic guitars. It is the fundamental pop discipline behind their otherwise country-rock framework.
