Biography
Mark Hoppus didn't just find them—he basically acted as the band's shadow manager and handed them a golden ticket to the MCA roster. Before they were Fenix TX, they were River Fenix, getting sued by the actor’s estate while they were trying to navigate the transition from Houston skate-punk to the big leagues. They had the unfortunate timing of hitting the mainstream right when the TRL boom was starting to rot from the inside. Lechuza was their shot at the heavyweight title, but the internal friction was already burning through the lineup. Jerry Finn—the guy who made every pop-punk record sound like a million bucks—was behind the board, but even his polish couldn't hide that the band was pulling in three different directions. Damon DeLaPaz was trying to play guitar and drums simultaneously in the studio because they couldn't keep a steady beat behind him, and that kind of frantic energy is exactly why those records feel like they’re vibrating at a higher frequency than their peers.

The Arc of Fenix TX
The pivots — what forced Fenix TX to reinvent.
The Drive-Thru Grind
Before the major label bloat, they were the scrappy flagship for Drive-Thru Records, re-releasing their self-titled debut to a hungry Warped Tour demographic. They were tighter and faster than the surf-pop bands, leaning into the aggressive California skate-punk sound despite being Texas transplants. You can hear the hunger in those early takes of 'Speechless' where the production is thin but the vocal harmonies are desperate and sharp.
The Jerry Finn Polish
The jump to MCA and the recruitment of super-producer Jerry Finn for Lechuza changed their DNA from basement punks to radio contenders. Finn brought in his signature wall-of-guitars sound and a drum clarity that made the tracks punch through car speakers. This era was defined by professional sheen and guest spots like Benji Madden, pushing them away from their Houston roots and into the center of the pop-punk explosion.
The Post-Breakup Limbo
After imploding on the Pop Disaster Tour, the band spent a decade as a ghost before resurfacing with the CRE.EP in 2016. The lineup had shifted again, with Ilan Rubin—who’s played with everyone from Nine Inch Nails to Angels & Airwaves—bringing a much more technical, heavy-hitting percussion style to the mix. It was a harder, more cynical sound that lacked the TRL-era bounce but showed they actually knew how to play their instruments once the makeup was off.
Influences
- Descendents — Milo Aukerman’s DNA is all over Salazar’s vocal delivery and the band's penchant for hyper-fast, melodic love songs. They’ve covered 'Silly Girl' live and consistently cited Bill Stevenson’s production style as the blueprint for their early chord progressions.
- Blink-182 — The connection is more than just friendship; Mark Hoppus produced their early demos and managed them during the Drive-Thru years. You hear the direct influence in the octave-heavy guitar riffs and the sophomoric humor that permeated their 1999 self-titled breakout.
- Bad Religion — Before they went full pop-melodic, the band's faster tempos and 'Oozin' Ahs' backing vocals were pulled straight from the Epitaph Records playbook. Salazar has openly credited Greg Graffin’s vocal layering as the reason Fenix TX sounds so massive on their choruses.
- The ALL — The technical precision of the drumming on the early River Fenix tapes is a direct homage to the intricate, caffeinated punk of ALL. They prioritized the tight, stops-and-starts rhythmic shifts that the Chad Price-era of ALL made standard in the scene.
- Doughboys — Fenix TX has frequently cited this Canadian outfit as the masters of the 'pop-hook-meets-distorted-crunch' formula. You can hear the similarity in the way they bridge the gap between alternative rock and melodic hardcore.
