Biography
There are several artists with the name Elder; 1) Elder is a four-piece progressive rock band from Boston, Massachusetts consisting of frontman Nick DiSalvo, bassist Jack Donovan, guitarist/keyboardist Michael Risberg and drummer Georg Edert. They have released seven full-length albums since 2006 and multiple demos and EPs. Elder is a genre-pushing rock band that melds heavy psychedelic sounds with progressive elements and evocative soundscapes.
The Arc of Elder
The pivots — what forced Elder to reinvent.
The Boston Basement Doom Era
Between the split with Queen Elephantine and their self-titled debut, Elder operated as a heavy-hitting three-piece drowning in high-wattage tube distortion. Original drummer Matt Couto kept them anchored to a plodding, monolithic groove while DiSalvo's guitar work stayed locked in a heavy pentatonic scale. You can hear the raw, unpolished sweat of the New England DIY scene in these tracks. It was loud, heavy, and derivative, but it gave them the muscle they needed before they started getting clever.
The Progressive Leap
By 2015's Lore, the band completely rewrote their own playbook. DiSalvo started incorporating intricate, weaving leads and complex time signatures that owed more to Yes than to Black Sabbath. The songs stretched past the ten-minute mark not because they were stuck on a single riff, but because they were mapping out actual movements. This was the moment they realized they could be heavy without relying on a wall of mindless fuzz.
The Berlin Krautrock Shift
Uprooting the band to Berlin and bringing in guitarist Michael Risberg permanently altered their DNA. The heavy space-rock experiments of The Gold & Silver Sessions in 2019 led directly into Omens, where synthesizers took center stage alongside the guitars. It was a sterile, clean, and highly precise sound captured in European studios, miles away from the sweaty American basements of their youth. The addition of Georg Edert on drums finalized this transition, turning them into a polished, progressive powerhouse.
Influences
- Colour Haze — DiSalvo has repeatedly cited these German psych-rockers as the main reason he realized heavy music could be warm, jammy, and melodic instead of just dark and oppressive. You can hear their direct footprint in the clean, winding guitar tone and shifting dynamics on the title track of Dead Roots Stirring. They showed Elder how to use space and light instead of just blunt force.
- Sleep — The heavy, lumbering riffs on Elder's 2008 debut are a direct consequence of studying Al Cisneros and Matt Pike. The band has openly admitted that their early material was an attempt to replicate the monolithic weight of Dopesmoker. That massive, slow-motion swing is the foundation they had to build before they could tear it down.
- Dungen — DiSalvo pointed to this Swedish psych-prog outfit as a massive inspiration for their adventurous arrangements and vintage tonal palette. The fluid, singing guitar solos on Lore mimic the expressive, overdriven style of Dungen's Reine Fiske. It is the bridge between classic seventies prog and modern heavy rock.
- Yes — Elder's mid-career shift toward hyper-melodic, multi-part epics was fueled by classic progressive rock giants. DiSalvo's clean, intricate, interlocking guitar lines on Reflections of a Floating World are straight out of the Steve Howe playbook. It moved them away from repetitive stoner jams into highly structured, symphonic heavy metal.
- Motorpsycho — This Norwegian band's fearless genre-hopping and massive double-album statements served as a blueprint for Elder's late-stage career. You can hear their influence in the dense, synth-heavy arrangements and driving, kraut-infused rhythms on Innate Passage. They proved that a rock band could stay heavy while completely abandoning traditional metal structures.
