Biography
German Jazz saxophonist and violinist from Nurnberg, Germany. Died February 22, 2026 aged 89.
He is classically trained and was teached by Paul Hindemith. In 1964, he and Dieter Serfas met Christian Burchard in Nürnberg and founded together the "Contemporary Trio", a Jazz formation.
They went to Munich and in 1969, him and Burchard founded together Embryo. He played with the band until 1972, when they went on a tour through Portugal and Northern Africa. After that tour, Hofmann left the band.
Edgar Hofmann has been a key player in the Bavarian Krautrock and fusion underground. He honed his craft as Jazz saxophonist in Munich underground Jazz clubs. After he left Embryo, he returned to the band frequently until the mid 1990's. During that time, he also travelled all around the world to play music and he became a songwriter for theatre productions.
