Biography

Cooperatively-led hard-bop quartet that originated in 1975 from pianist Cedar Walton's "Magic Triangle" trio (Cedar Walton, piano, Sam Jones, bass, Bill Higgins, drums). Walton and Higgins appeared on all albums by the group. Eastern Rebellion recorded seven albums between 1975 and 1994. Note that for the first four albums on the label, the group name appears in the title only for most releases.
Original tenor saxophonist George Coleman was replaced on the second album by Bob Berg, who recorded three albums with the group between 1977 and 1983. In the 1990s, tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore replaced Berg and recorded with the group for their final three albums on the label.
The group expanded to a quintet for one album, "Eastern Rebellion 3", adding Walton's former Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers bandmate Curtis Fuller. This album was original bassist Sam Jones' final record with the group. For "Eastern Rebellion 4", they expanded the lineup once again, adding trumpeter Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros to the quintet format of the previous album. This was bassist David Williams' first recording with the group, though he had been performing live with the group starting in the late 1970s. Williams worked with Eastern Rebellion and with Cedar Walton's groups until Walton's death in 2013.
The albums released under the individual band member names are:
* Eastern Rebellion
* Eastern Rebellion 2
* Eastern Rebellion 3
* Eastern Rebellion 4
Some reissues of the Timeless Records albums have been released under the "Eastern Rebellion" group name rather than credited to the individual band members.
