Biography

B. August 20, 1954, Honolulu, HI
D. September 7, 2021, Honolulu, HI
David John "DJ" Pratt (1954–2021) was a Hawaiian guitarist, songwriter, and audio engineer, best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of Kalapana, formed in 1974 with Malani Bilyeu, Mackey Feary, and Kirk Thompson. Kalapana became one of the defining acts of 1970s contemporary Hawaiian music, blending soft-rock, soul, and island influences on hits like "Black Sand," "When The Morning Comes," and "Kona Daze," ranking second only to Cecilio & Kapono among the era's biggest local groups. Pratt's guitar work helped shape the band's warm, melodic sound. Beyond performing, he worked as a television and audio sound engineer and producer, earning two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for his work with Kalapana and three more for studio engineering.
