Biography

Jeremie Pennick (born November 27, 1984), known professionally as Benny the Butcher, is an American rapper from Buffalo, New York, USA. He is part of the hip hop group Griselda with Westside Gunn and Conway The Machine, and is part of the collective Black Soprano Family. Benny The Butcher knew by the age of ten that he wanted to be involved with music. He self-released his mixtapes in the late 2000s as B.E.N.N.Y., including The Mayor's Back and Chains Bond.

The Arc of Benny the Butcher

The pivots — what forced Benny the Butcher to reinvent.

  1. The Griselda Blueprint

After years of generic mixtape tropes, Benny locked in with Westside Gunn and Conway the Machine to refine the Griselda aesthetic around 2016. Daringer’s production shift away from polished trap toward grim, loop-heavy minimalism forced Benny to tighten his pocket and sharpen his delivery. This era solidified the 'Butcher' persona, moving from standard hustler rhymes to the dense, narrative-heavy street reporting found on 'My First Brick' and 'Butcher on Steroids.' The result was a stark, localized sound that put Buffalo on the map by ignoring every current rap trend.

  2. The Alchemist Elevation

Everything shifted when Benny fully integrated with The Alchemist for 'Tana Talk 3' in 2018, moving him from a regional underground king to a national heavyweight. Recording at Al's studio brought a cinematic sheen to the grit, and the inclusion of veteran features like Royce da 5'9" proved Benny belonged in the lyricist upper tier. You hear it in the breath control and the confidence; he wasn't just hungry anymore, he was dominant. This pivot turned the Buffalo movement into a genuine commercial force without scrubbing the dirt off the tracks.

  3. The Hit-Boy Expansion

For 'Burden of Proof' in 2020, Benny traded the basement grime for Hit-Boy’s high-fidelity, soul-sampled luxury production. The sessions were a deliberate attempt to see if the Butcher could survive on the kind of glossy, anthemic beats that Jay-Z or Nas would favor. It worked because Benny didn't change his flow, he just changed the room he was standing in, proving his technical skill wasn't dependent on lo-fi aesthetics. This era was a massive middle finger to anyone who thought he was only good for one-speed underground boom-bap.

Influences

  • Kool G RapBenny has cited G Rap as the primary architect of the multi-syllabic street narrative style he employs. You hear it in the dense internal rhyme schemes on 'The Plugs I Met,' where every bar is packed with rhythmic technicality. He’s essentially the modern heir to the '4, 5, 6' throne.
  • The Notorious B.I.G.The influence shows up in Benny's ability to balance heavy street content with an innate sense of timing and 'big' charisma. He famously flipped Biggie’s 'Ten Crack Commandments' logic for his own '10 Glad Tidings' and mimics that same conversational yet menacing flow. It’s that Brooklyn-to-Buffalo lineage of the hustler-poet.
  • RaekwonThe 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' DNA is all over the Griselda movement, specifically the obsession with organized crime hierarchies. Benny uses the same cinematic 'mafioso' slang and coke-rap tropes that Rae perfected in '95. He treats a verse like a ledger, just like the Chef did on 'Glaciers of Ice.'
  • Jay-ZBenny mimics the 'Reasonable Doubt' era Hov, focusing on the mental toll and the corporate logistics of the drug trade. He has referenced Jay’s early career as the blueprint for his own late-bloomer success and independent grind. The influence is evident in the calm, unhurried delivery Benny uses even when the beat is chaotic.
  • The LOXThe gritty, punch-in-the-mouth group dynamic of Griselda was modeled directly after Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch. Benny has shared the booth with Jadakiss multiple times, and you can hear the influence in the way he prioritizes 'hard' bars over catchy hooks. It’s that relentless, Yonkers-style sparring translated to the Buffalo winters.
