Biography

Armored Saint is a heavy metal band originating from Los Angeles, California. Armored Saint was formed in 1982 by brothers Phil and Gonzo Sandoval, and guitarist David Prichard, while attending Woodrow Wilson High School. Next to join were singer John Bush and bassist Joey Vera. Gonzo Sandoval came up with the name after getting stoned with the other band members and seeing the film "Excalibur" at a theater in Monterey Park. Armored Saint recorded

The Arc of Armored Saint

The pivots — what forced Armored Saint to reinvent.

  1. The Chrysalis Grind

Moving from the indie world of Brian Slagel to the corporate machine at Chrysalis for March of the Saint meant getting a bigger production budget but losing the raw grit. Max Norman was behind the board, bringing the same high-gloss sheen he gave Ozzy, which made the band sound massive but arguably too clean for the L.A. club scene they came out of. You can hear the struggle between their natural street-level aggression and the label's desire for a radio hit on tracks like Can U Deliver, a song that almost worked despite the goofy music video.

  2. The Salvation Demos

After getting dropped by Chrysalis and losing Dave Prichard, the band re-signed with Metal Blade to record the material Dave had written before he died. They brought in Dave Jerden to produce, fresh off his work with Jane’s Addiction and Alice in Chains, which gave the guitars a thick, muscular tone that the 80s records lacked. This era redefined them from a power metal act into a hard rock powerhouse, focusing on the pocket and the groove rather than just speed.

  3. The Modern Reclamation

When John Bush finally walked away from the Anthrax circus, the band didn't just do a nostalgia lap; they leaned into Joey Vera’s growing skills as a producer. Starting with La Raza and hitting a peak with Win Hands Down, they stopped trying to fit into any specific subgenre and just made heavy, complex records on their own schedule. These sessions are tighter because they aren't chasing a trend, relying on the Sandoval brothers' telepathic rhythm section and Vera’s meticulous engineering to carry the weight.

Influences

  • Thin LizzyThe dual-lead harmony work between Phil Sandoval and Dave Prichard was a direct lift from the Gorham and Robertson era. John Bush has explicitly cited Phil Lynott as a massive influence on his phrasing and storytelling. You hear it most clearly on the melodic interludes of Raising Fear.
  • Judas PriestBefore they even had a record deal, they were covering 'Tyrant' in their live sets. The band’s entire approach to high-speed, twin-guitar attacks is rooted in the Sin After Sin era. Joey Vera's driving bass lines mirror the relentless pick-attack style of Ian Hill.
  • UFOThe band frequently cites Michael Schenker's playing as the blueprint for their melodic sensibility. During the early club days at the Troubadour, they leaned heavy into the space-rock-turned-metal structures popularized by UFO in the late 70s. The soloing on March of the Saint is pure Schenker worship.
  • Deep PurpleGonzo Sandoval’s drumming style is heavily indebted to Ian Paice, specifically the way he swings while playing heavy. They tracked a cover of 'Burn' during the Symbol of Salvation sessions as a tribute to that influence. The bluesy foundation under their metal riffs comes straight from the Mark II and III lineups.
  • Black SabbathThey toured with Dio-era Sabbath early on, and you can hear the mid-tempo stomp of Mob Rules all over their heavier 90s riffs. John Bush’s grit has more in common with the chest-thumping power of Ronnie James Dio than the operatic screamers of the L.A. strip. It’s that blue-collar, Birmingham-derived heaviness that kept them grounded.
