Biography
Andy Creeggan walked away from the biggest pop-rock machine in Canada right before the check truly cleared. He was the secret weapon in Barenaked Ladies, providing the jazz-inflected bones and piano arrangements that gave their debut, Gordon, its actual musical weight. Leaving the band in '95 wasn't about drama; it was about the fact that he was a conservatory-trained percussionist and composer who couldn't spend the rest of his life playing three-chord novelty hits for college crowds. He traded the arena tours for the quiet of his brother Jim’s upright bass and a series of experimental solo records under the 'Andiwork' banner. These aren't pop records. They are meticulous, percussion-heavy investigations into acoustic textures that sound more like something coming out of a European jazz label than a guy who used to sing backing vocals on 'If I Had $1000000.' He’s a specialist who realized early on that a gold record is just a heavy piece of metal if you aren't playing the notes you actually hear in your head.
The Arc of Andy Creeggan
The pivots — what forced Andy Creeggan to reinvent.
The BNL Exit
The departure from Barenaked Ladies in 1995 served as the definitive break from the commercial pop world. While the band was heading toward the massive production of 'Stunt,' Andy retreated to the Toronto scene to focus on composition and the more avant-garde leanings of The Brothers Creeggan. This period is defined by a shift from the snare-drum-and-acoustic-guitar template to complex, polyrhythmic jazz arrangements. You hear the relief on the records, where the pressure to write a hook is replaced by the freedom to let a piano motif breathe for five minutes.
The Andiwork Anthology
Starting in 1997, the 'Andiwork' series became his primary vessel for archival and new composition, stretching across three decades. These releases function like a curated diary of a multi-instrumentalist who refuses to hire a marketing team. The production on these sets is dry and intimate, often recorded in small studio environments that highlight his mallet percussion work and precise piano touch. It’s the sound of a man completely uncoupled from the music industry, operating purely on the timeline of his own technical curiosity.
Influences
- Steve Reich — Creeggan’s background as a trained percussionist leads directly back to Reich’s minimalist structures. You hear it in the interlocking marimba and piano patterns throughout the 'Andiwork' series. It’s that same focus on phase and rhythmic repetition.
- Pat Metheny — The melodic sensibilities of the Brothers Creeggan records mirror the mid-70s ECM sound. Andy has specifically cited Metheny’s approach to atmospheric jazz-fusion as a template for his own compositions. It shows up in how he builds tension using acoustic space rather than volume.
- Vince Guaraldi — The foundational DNA of Creeggan’s piano playing is rooted in Guaraldi’s whimsical but technically proficient West Coast jazz. He’s mentioned the 'Peanuts' composer as an early gateway for his melodic phrasing. That bounce is the only thing he kept from his early pop days.
- Paul Simon — During his BNL tenure and early solo years, the influence of 'Graceland'-era Simon is evident in his rhythmic vocal delivery and global percussion integration. He studied Simon’s ability to weave complex rhythmic beds into standard song structures. The result is a pop sensibility that’s smarter than it needs to be.
- Keith Jarrett — The improvisational spirit and 'solo piano' focus of the later Andiwork volumes reflect Jarrett’s influence on his compositional style. He captures that same sense of a performer sitting alone at the keys, letting the room dictate the tempo. It’s about the physical relationship between the player and the instrument.
