Greg Brown

former guitarist in CAKE

Greg Brown walked away from CAKE right as 'Short Skirt/Long Jacket' was turning into a generational anthem. People forget he wasn't just a touring hand; he was the architect of that dry, deadpan guitar scratch that made 'Fashion Nugget' move. He spent years playing through a cheap, solid-state Peavey amp because the lack of warmth suited the band’s cynicism. When he quit in 1997, he didn't go chasing a solo pop career. He went back to Sacramento to build something that didn't require a sarcastic trumpet player. He eventually teamed up with Victor Damiani to form Deathray, a move that felt like a deliberate middle finger to the major label machine. They signed to Capricorn—a label with a massive history that was basically a ghost ship by the late '90s. Brown traded the funk-lite staccato for a fuzzier, power-pop crunch that leaned into his love for The Cars and Big Star. It was louder, messier, and infinitely more honest than the polished irony he helped sell to the masses in his old band.
