The Arc of Abstract Orchestra
The pivots — what forced Abstract Orchestra to reinvent.
The Detroit Blueprint
The group’s 2017 debut focused entirely on the James Yancey catalog, specifically the stuttering, unquantized percussion style that defined the Detroit sound. Mitchell pushed the rhythm section to mimic Dilla’s signature 'lazy' timing, forcing classically trained musicians to play behind the beat without losing the pocket. You can hear it on their version of 'Workonit,' where the horns have to snap with the same mechanical aggression as a sampled hit. It wasn't just a tribute; it was a proof of concept that a big band could function as a sampler.
The Madvillain Expansion
Moving from Dilla to the Madvillainy material required a shift from soul-inflections to the dark, cinematic surrealism of Madlib’s production. Across two volumes and a 2023 remix project, the ensemble had to navigate the erratic, comic-book-noir structures of MF DOOM tracks that often lacked traditional song formats. They brought in collaborators like Illa J and Slum Village to bridge the gap between the instrumental arrangements and the mic. This era turned the band into a touring powerhouse that proved they could handle the most abstract, avant-garde corners of the Stones Throw universe.
Influences
- J Dilla — The entire 2017 'Dilla' LP is a direct transcription of his production techniques. You hear it in the micro-timing of the drums and the way the brass section mimics the filtered, low-pass aesthetic of an MPC-3000. He is the fundamental architect of their rhythmic DNA.
- Madvillain — Abstract Orchestra dedicated three full releases to the Madlib and MF DOOM collaboration. They painstakingly recreated the disjointed loops from 'Accordian' and 'Meat Grinder' using live woodwinds and strings. It taught the band how to handle non-linear, sample-heavy song structures.
- Slum Village — The band directly collaborated with the group on the 'Fantastic 2020' projects to recreate the 'Fantastic Vol. 2' sound. This connection provided the authentic Detroit vocal lineage to match the band's instrumental recreations. It’s the sound of the Jay Dee era brought into a live room.
- Stan Kenton — Rob Mitchell has cited Kenton’s progressive big band arrangements as a structural North Star. You hear this in the dense, sometimes dissonant horn clusters that mirror the complexity of 1950s experimental jazz. It gives the hip-hop covers a sophisticated, mid-century weight.
- David Axelrod — The heavy, dramatic string arrangements and booming drums typical of Axelrod’s 'Songs of Innocence' are all over the Orchestra's sound. Since Axelrod was a primary sample source for the producers they cover, the band effectively reverse-engineered his production style back into a live setting. Holy fuck, the brass swells on their 'Madvillain' tracks are pure Axelrod worship.
