Born January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York City, USA.
Aaliyah unfortunately died on August 25, 2001, in Marsh Harbour, Abaco Islands, The Bahamas (Aged 22) in an Airplane crash that also claimed the lives of 8 others after filming the music video for her single "Rock The Boat", featured on her third album, "Aaliyah".
She released 3 albums within her lifetime: "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number", "One In A Million" and her praised self-titled album, "Aaliyah".
Aaliyah starred in 2 movies, "Romeo Must Die" and posthumously, "Queen of the Damned".
Daughter, sister. Niece of Record Executive Barry Hankerson and (by marriage) Soul legend Gladys Knight. Cousin of record executive Jomo Hankerson and rapper Tekomin Williams.
Married to controversial R&B Singer/Producer R. Kelly from 1994-1995 (annulled). At the time of passing, in a relationship with (and had reportedly planned to marry) Hip-hop mogul Damon Dash.
Upon releasing her debut album "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" in 1994, Aaliyah gained a steadily growing reputation for helping to redefine contemporary R&B, pop and hip hop, earning her the nicknames the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban pop".
A sophomore album "One In A Million" was released in 1996, and her final album, "Aaliyah", appeared earlier in the year of her tragic death.
Aaliyah's posthumous works range from 1 Movie and 2 singles: "Poison featuring The Weeknd" released in 2021 and "Gone featuring Tank" released in 2025.
