Joe Jack Talcum & The Powders

United States

Four tracks tracked in a living room in Iowa City on a cold February weekend in 2011 is all this project gave the world. It’s the definition of a basement handshake deal between Joe Jack Talcum—the high-pitched, anxiety-riddled soul of The Dead Milkmen—and Samuel Locke Ward, the prolific king of the Midwestern lo-fi underground. This wasn’t about polished studio craft; it was about the sound of cheap microphones clipping and the frantic energy of two people who write songs faster than most people drink coffee. They didn't overthink the lineup, pulling in Grace Locke Ward and Rachel Feldmann to round out the noise. The resulting EP, 'Live at the Haunted Gauntlet,' isn't actually a live record in the arena sense—it’s a document of four people making a joyous, sloppy racket before Joe had to head back to Philly. It captures that specific, precarious moment where outsider folk-punk meets the DIY cassette culture of the 2010s without any of the self-conscious posturing that usually ruins the vibe.
