About

After releasing a string of highly acclaimed rockabilly-inflected albums in the late '80s and early '90s, Social Distortion returned to its hardcore roots with 1996’s White Light, White Heat, White Trash (a play on the Velvet Underground’s seminal 1968 album White Light/White Heat). The brand of California punk rock that Social Distortion had helped invent had found massive success in the form of The Offspring and Green Day, while leader Mike Ness had rediscovered his own punk roots with the archival release Mainliner. All these factors conspired to create songs like “Don’t Drag Me Down,” “Through These Eyes," and “Down on the World Again,” which combine the pathos of Ness’ voice with the throttling attack of classic punk. Producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soul Asylum, Soundgarden) gave the music a dense and heavy sound that made Ness and his band appear like wizened troubadours. Where other punk bands jacked up the tempos for effect, the songs here with the strongest impact are purposefully slow, as in “When the Angels Sing,” “Dear Lover," and the hit single “I Was Wrong.”

This grouping gathers together all versions of the "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" album, originally released in 1996, as well as subsequent repressings and bootleg versions.
"White Light, White Heat, White Trash" is the fifth album by American punk rock band, Social Distortion, released on September 17, 1996, by Epic Records. The album was produced by Michael Beinhorn. "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" is the last Social Distortion album to feature guitarist Dennis Danell who died on February 29, 2000, of a cerebral aneurysm at the age of 38. It is also the band's last release on Epic Records. The album received Social Distortion's highest ever chart position, entering the Billboard 200 album chart at #27. Stylistically, the album is harder and considered a return to their punk roots.
The title of the album is a play on the 1968 Velvet Underground album, "White Light/White Heat". The Velvet Underground record is known for being one of the most original, and probably the heaviest, records of the time, just as "White Light, White Heat, White Trash" for Social Distortion has a harder sound than those albums preceding it.
Although Chuck Biscuits credited in liner notes as the drummer, actual drum perfomance on the record was done by Deen Castronovo but for whatever reason he remained uncredited.
