About
If the preceding <i>Green Mind</i> cleaned up Dinosaur Jr.’s sound, <i>Where You Been</i> thickened it considerably. With J Mascis rebuilding his band around original drummer Murph and new bassist Mike Johnson, Dinosaur Jr. embrace the role of post-grunge Crazy Horse on “Out There” and flex some Southern-rock boogie on “Start Choppin.” But Mascis’ widescreen aspirations linger; the acoustic ballad “Not the Same” is outfitted with rumbling timpani rolls, while honeyed harmonies smooth the “Ziggy Stardust”–style crunch of “Get Me.”
