About
"When Dream and Day Unite" is the debut studio album by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released on 6 March 1989 through Mechanic/MCA Record. The album consists largely of material developed during the group’s early period under the name Majesty, and it is the only Dream Theater album recorded with their original full line-up, featuring vocalist Charlie Dominici. He was replaced by James LaBrie on subsequent release. The band was formed in 1985 by John Myung, Mike Portnoy, and John Petrucci while they were students at Berklee College of Music. Originally named Majesty, the group took inspiration for the name from a comment by Portnoy about the ending of "Bastille Day" by Rush. Kevin Moore later joined on keyboard, and the band initially recruited vocalist Chris Collin. Between 1985 and 1986, they recorded "The Majesty Demos", after which they were compelled to change their name due to a legal dispute with another group. Collins departed during this period, and after several line-up change, Dominici was selected as lead vocalist. The name Dream Theater was suggested by Portnoy’s father, referencing a local cinema, and was subsequently adopted. The band signed with Mechanic/MCA and recorded their debut album in mid-1988 at Kajem/Victory Studios in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, in a three-week session. The studio was also known for hosting the recording of "Operation: Mindcrime" by Queensrÿche. Despite expectations generated by their earlier demo, "When Dream and Day Unite" received limited commercial attention upon release. The label later terminated its contract with the band, and Dream Theater undertook a small-scale tour primarily in the New York area. Two promotional single, "Status Seeker" and "Afterlife", were issued, with radio edits and remixes produced by Terry Brown. Internal tensions and creative differences led to Dominici’s departure, leaving the band without a permanent vocalist until late 1990. In 2004, the band performed the album in full to mark its fifteenth anniversary in Los Angele. The concert included guest appearances by Dominici and former keyboardist Derek Sherinian, while Moore did not participate. The performance was recorded and released as "When Dream and Day Reunite" through Portnoy’s YtseJam Record, and later reissued via InsideOut as part of the Dream Theater Lost Not Forgotten Archives serie. The release also included live performances of "Metropolis—Part I" from the album "Images and Words" and "To Live Forever", a B-side from "Awake", both of which had been written shortly after the debut album and performed during its tour cycle. .
