Originally written and recorded in demo-form in the USA by Barry Mann (opens in a new tab) & Cynthia Weil (opens in a new tab) as a potential single for The Righteous Brothers (opens in a new tab).
It was picked up by Mickie Most (opens in a new tab) and the song was given a new intro to reflect the band's 'hometown environment' in the UK. Burdon's rendition of "We've" as "We" on the song is often seen in the titling as "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place".
US copies on MGM Records and subsequent appearances on the US album Animal Tracks and US compilation The Best Of The Animals contain an alternate take of the A-Side with different lyrics than the original UK single.
• The lyrics "Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'/Watch his hair, been turnin' grey" are changed to "See my daddy in bed a-dyin'/See his hair, been turnin' grey".
• The pre-chorus is different on both versions. (e.g. UK: "He's been workin' so hard/My, I've been workin' too, baby/Every night and day/Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah"
-> US: "Cause he's been workin', yeah/Every day, slavin' his life away/He's been workin', baby/He's been workin', workin', workin', workin'")
