About
Released the year before his tragic death at age 29, Jay Reatard’s final album can yield some uncomfortable resonances, such as its pessimistic title and the lingering message of the tongue-in-cheek opener “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me.” But even the rawest, darkest moments are empowered by his high-voltage punk energy and deep love of anthemic underground pop. The potentially gloomy “Hang Them All” gets hugely buoyed by suite-like twists, while “Man of Steel” proves that the Memphis iconoclast never wanted to surrender his youthful brattiness.
