After the release of 1990's Naked City John Zorn wanted to release a full record of "hardcore miniatures" but Nonesuch showed no interest in releasing it. They did however bankroll the project allowing Zorn to license it to Shimmy Disc and Earache.
Nine of the miniatures appeared previously on Naked City.
The remaining thirty-three on グラン・ギニョール = Grand Guignol in 1992.
