About

It took 11 years for Jill Scott to release To Whom This May Concern following its 2015 predecessor Woman, and she comes out of the gate swinging—with a little help from her friends. Opener “Dope Shit” features Maha Adachi Earth proclaiming, “I be good/I do dope shit,” and on the Trombone Shorty-assisted “Be Great,” Scott cooks up a funk-soul romp built around horn stabs and a shuffling drum groove. She tells herself, confidently, “I’ma go ahеad and be great, why not?” There’s an infectious spirit that pervades the album, a declaration from Scott to her listeners that they should go out and grab the things they want because that’s what she’s doing. “A Universe” showcases the many sides of the Philly songwriter’s artistry as she cooks up a swaggering ode to unexpected love. “I felt like my love life was finished/I was satisfied, believe me/I got my music, my family/Genuine friends who love me,” she admits. Then, a surprise: “I wasn't even feeling lonely/Then you pulled up on me.”

The sequencing for the vinyl and CD pressings of To Whom This May Concern differs from the streaming/digital version—the track "Àṣẹ" is the fourth track on the vinyl and CD pressings, whereas it's placed as the 18th track on the streaming/digital version.
Also, on vinyl pressings of the album, some of the tracks listed on the labels for sides B and C are incorrect (i.e. on the side C label, "Me 4" is incorrectly listed as the opener of side C, when it's actually the closing track on side B (coming after "BPOTY"). The tracklisting in the gatefold corresponds to the streaming/digital version, not the actual sequencing of the vinyl and CD pressings.
"Norf Side" contains excerpts from "Escape From Planet Earth," performed by Continental IV
"Me 4" samples "What Happened to That Boy", written by Bryan Williams, Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, Terrence Thornton, and Gene Thornton, as performed by Baby featuring Clipse.
"Ode to Nikki" contains excerpts from "Peaceful Sky," performed by Zodiac
"To B Honest" contains excerpts from "With You I'm Born Again," performed by Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright
